but, only if they were made available after January 1, 2021.

As part of a new initiative to extend device longevity, Microsoft will now provide six years of driver and firmware upgrades for Surface notebooks released after January 1, 2021.

According to Windows Central’s coverage, firmware updates “are designed to make the device work better,” ranging from general “performance improvements” to specific brand-specific capabilities. The timestamp on the official support page suggests that this upgrade was made somewhere in early October, which makes it fascinating. The Surface Laptop Go 3 was released at the same time as this, but until recently, no one was aware of these modifications.

With the end of service date listed in the right column, the website includes a list of all the models that will receive extended support. The Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop Studio, and Surface Go 3 are among the devices that will receive their final patch on October 5, 2027.

With a few notable exceptions, the majority of Surface models released before to January 1, 2021, will continue to operate on the previous four-year schedule. A few will receive the extended support, but it won’t last the entire six years—more like five and a half. For instance, the end-of-service date for the Surface Laptop 3, which was released in October 2019, is July 2024.

We couldn’t help but wonder if Microsoft‘s decision to broaden patch rollout was influenced by Google. Google first revealed plans to extend software support for Chromebooks back in September. Both of these proposals are extremely similar, but Microsoft’s 10-year commitment is more generous than Google’s. Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see tech companies prolonging the life of their devices.
